The vast expanse of territory known as Utah tends to be considered “remote,” and therefore largely available for military and industrial uses. Among other installations, Utah is home to 2 large-scale hazardous waste incinerators, at least 7 chemical, munitions and explosives manufacturing plants, at least 6 active weapons testing sites, the second largest open copper pit mine in the world (the Bingham Copper Pit, owned and operated by Kennecott Copper Company), one of the nation’s worst air polluters (MagCorp Magnesium Chloride plant), 2 nuclear waste disposal sites and 5 sites with radioactive tailings from uranium mines.
